PR for the whole world. Why the Astronomer scandal can be considered the case of the year

In the digital world even a small startup can receive attention comparable to the scale of a global brand. This is exactly what happened to Astronomer, an American IT company that in just a couple of weeks in 2025 gained an unexpected experience: a reputation story that began with a CEO scandal. Why can it be considered the PR case of the year? We're sorting it out.

Panic and focus of attention

The crisis flared up on July 16 of this year when a "kissing camera" at a Coldplay concert in a Boston suburb captured the embrace of Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and the head of the HR department Kristin Cabot. The video instantly went viral as the couple panicked and tried to hide from the camera with lead singer Chris Martin humorously commenting, "Either they're having an affair or they're very shy." The attention to the incident was reinforced by memes and numerous jokes on social networks, as it instantly became clear that Andy Byron and Kristin Cabot were not free and had families.

How the information void has intensified the crisis

The official reaction of Astronomer's management to the office romance that became public did not follow either on the first day of the crisis or on the second. The lack of an official announcement created a vacuum that was quickly filled with rumors and fakes. In particular, one of the viral posts containing a fake letter of apology attributed to Byron and including lines from a Coldplay song provoked harsh criticism from social media users who mistook the letter for the real thing. This has certainly intensified the crisis.

Fakes

1. Byron's statement that he was concerned that "what was supposed to be a private moment became public without my consent."

2. Byron's wife's statements about the scandal (generated by artificial intelligence).

3. Coldplay's announcement that they will now have spectator areas without cameras for people and their "side effects."

4. The red–faced woman photographed next to Byron and the head of the human resources department is an Astronomer employee named Alice.

Only on the second day after the incident at the concert, on July 18, Astronomer stated that Byron had not made any statements, that Alice Stoddard was not present at the event, and other employees were not captured on video, and that "all reports to the contrary are incorrect."

Work on mistakes

On the third day after the incident, on July 19, Astronomer accepted CEO Andy Byron's resignation and officially declared its values, sending a message that the CEO is not above corporate ethics. This approach quickly cut off the discussion about double standards and showed that the company is not afraid to act decisively.

"We expect our management to set standards for both behavior and responsibility, but these standards have not been met recently," the company said in a statement.

After Byron's resignation, the company was temporarily led by one of the co-founders, product director Pete DeJoy. In this way, the team signaled that the situation was under reliable control, even in the face of an obvious crisis of trust.

"The events of recent days have attracted media attention that few companies face, especially startups like ours in the narrow field of data and AI. The attention turned out to be unusual and even surreal for the team. I would never wish it to happen like this, but now everyone knows about Astronomer. We have never avoided difficulties: almost ten years of working on the company have repeatedly put us in front of serious challenges - and each time we have come out of them only stronger," said the interim head of Astronomer (source of quote Тengrinews.kz ).

PR for the whole world

Having completely recovered from the stressful situation, Astronomer nevertheless did not miss the opportunity to turn the crisis in its favor. On July 25, a video was distributed with Gwyneth Paltrow, the ex-wife of the lead singer of Coldplay, the band at whose concert the incident occurred.

The actress appeared in the frame to remind about Astronomer's activities, invite her to a conference and present everything with irony and self-irony. "Hello. My name is Gwyneth Paltrow. I was hired temporarily so that I could speak on behalf of 300 Astronomer employees...", the famous actress says with a smile. In the video, Paltrow humorously reminded what Astronomer does, noting that there are still places for DevOps at the fall conference.

This thoughtful move with elements of self-irony took the focus away from the scandal and shifted it to the product, changed the emotional tone, and emphasized the company's confidence in the market. The audience, tired of the tension, got a reason to smile, and this is worth a lot in the context of the crisis. All that remains is to calculate the profit from the tickets sold for the autumn conference, which Paltrow so wittily advertised.

Obviously, the Astronomer case can be considered the case of the year. The company not only survived the scandal that became known to the whole world, but also turned it into an unprecedented PR asset. This is the main paradox and benefit of the digital age: sometimes a scandal of universal proportions helps to take off in a way that others never dreamed of. Not without the help of talented PR people, of course.
